The 12 steps of Gasoholics Anonymous

Several years I was haunted by an idea ... to take the 12 steps paradigm, as first described by Alcoholics Anonymous, and apply it to gasoline. I did some studying, and was rather astonished that it represented a powerful spiritual transformation process. In any case, the following is my attempt to apply this to gasoholism, or the addiction to gasoline.

  1. Admitted our inability to choose other than gasoline vehicles, or choose electricity not derived from fossil fuel sources. That even if we were to choose differently than gasoline or other fossil fuels, that the ability to exercise that choice has been removed from us.
  2. Came to believe that our real needs can be satisfied in many ways, that reliance on one technology such as fossil fuels prevents us from recognizing the other means to satisfy our needs, and that the higher purpose of technology is to help humanity become more human, not to poison us all.
  3. We made a decision to create personal and social change, and to develop the to enact that change. We made a decision to align our real needs with the divine power and to live in alignment with the higher purpose in all things.
  4. We made a searching and fearless inventory of the impacts of our addiction to gasoline and other fossil fuels.
  5. We admitted to the divine power, ourselves, and another human being, the nature of our wrongs in seeking the ego-driven delights brought by gasoline and other fossil fuels, and the wrongs committed in our name by the governments and corporations who twist the world to bring us these fuels.
  6. Were entirely ready to work with the divine power in marrying the higher purpose with our will and desire for transportation and other modern comforts, to seek sane sources of power, and to remove all obstacles in the way of reaching this goal.
  7. We humbly acted as agents of the divine power, in alignment with the higher purpose as we best understand it, to request that alternative choices to gasoline and fossil fuels be made available to us, and when and where those alternatives are not made available, we act to create societal change allowing those alternatives to be available.
  8. We made a list of all persons and beings past, present and future our use of gasoline and other fossil fuels had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. We continued to take inventory of our ongoing progress and impacts, and when our behaviour caused unnecessary damage to others or the environment, we promptly admitted it and took action to mitigate it.
  11. Sought through heartfelt connection with the divine power to continuously learn more of the higher purpose for the gadgets society creates, and to seek to carry out the divine purpose for our lives and those gadgets have in our lives.
  12. Having had a personal and spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to gasoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

With appreciation to Alchoholics Anonymous and Car Busters for inspiration. I am probably going to tweak this again, and am interested in feedback.
